Michigan Indian Child Welfare Agency

Michigan Indian Child Welfare Agency

The Michigan Indian Child Welfare Agency (MICWA) is a tribally controlled non-profit child placing agency committed to maintaining American-Indian culture through welfare services provided by Indian people, organizations, and services.

The emphasis of the Agency is keeping children in the homes of their parents. When this is not possible, the first priority is to place children in the home of a relative. If this is not possible, every attempt is made to place the child in an American-Indian foster home or recommend an adoptive placement. This ensures that cultural identity, customs, and way of life are passed from the adult to the child.

The purpose of MICWA is to preserve, promote, and advance American-Indian culture and tradition by protecting Native American families, clans, tribes, and communities. Cultural enrichment for children will be provided as a service to instill them with a sense of pride and identity.
