Registered Sanitarian – The primary goals of a registered sanitarian are to determine whether exposure to environmental hazards is linked to adverse human health conditions, and to develop prevention systems to eliminate or minimize hazards and their adverse effects. The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan staffs a Registered Sanitarian to address various environmental health issues affecting the Michigan tribes. More specifically, some of the regular duties performed by the sanitarian include:
1. Offering technical assistance to tribal personnel on specific environmental health issues.
2. Conducting food safety and institutional environmental health surveys.
3. Conducting retail food establishment plan reviews.
4. Providing basic food safety training for retail and institutional food service personnel.
5. Coordinating foodborne illness investigations involving retail food establishments on tribal land; acting as a liaison between local, non-tribal environmental health authorities and tribal governmental elements during investigations.
6. Conducting water system sanitary surveys and facility cross connection inspections.
7. Conducting playground safety inspections; consulting with tribal personnel on playground planning issues.
8. Investigating residential and institutional mold, IAQ and background noise complaints.
9. Planning and assisting in community-specific pet vaccination clinics.
