SAULT STE. MARIE – Stacey Daley has joined the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan as a program manager in the Health Education and Chronic and Disease department. Stacey is working on the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program and Colorectal Cancer Control Program to help Anishinaabekwe in Michigan navigate their breast and cervical cancer journey.
“I look forward to serving the tribal communities throughout Michigan to help our tribal members get cancer prevention and early detection strategies in place,” said Daley. She continues “I have heard of late-stage diagnosis of treatable cancers too many times. I hope through my work that I can help tribal members to get screened and to be treated at earlier stages.”
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the BC3NP program provides low income women access to breast and cervical cancer screening services (mammograms and Pap tests) and follow-up care if needed. The program does not pay for cancer treatment, but women may be eligible for a special Medicaid program through BC3NP that will cover cancer treatment. More information is located at: michigan.gov/mdhhs/keep-mi-healthy/chronicdiseases/cancer/bc3np
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the purpose of the Colorectal Cancer Control Program is to increase colorectal cancer screening rates among people between 45 and 75 years of age. The program works with clinics, hospitals, and other health care organizations to use and strengthen strategies that have been shown to increase colorectal cancer screening, otherwise known as evidence-based interventions. These strategies are described in the Guide to Community Preventive Services Guide. There are 35 award recipients including the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan.
Stacey will facilitate formal agreements with participating tribal health systems and conduct site visits. She will also monitor program budgets, provide training and support for implementation of evidence based interventions and patient navigation services within the representive tribal health systems. She will also be tasked to utilize community-based participatory approaches to develop and disseminate small media and patient education materials.
Stacey is a RN with a BSN in Nursing. Stacey’s background in nursing helps to support her in this role. “My favorite part of being a nurse is providing care for my tribal community. All of my experience in nursing come with me to Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan from patient care to care management. I get to serve and care for people of our communities in a different way than in the past while learning how to integrate all of that into this role to help get cancer screenings to help our people in a different way. I hope to bring with me the love I have to provide for the communities I serve.”
Stacey is a citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and is from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2022 and Lake Superior State University with an Associate of Applied Science: Health Care Provider with Practical Nursing Certificate in 2012. She comes to the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan from the Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishinabe School where she worked as a Middle School Nurse. She also works at MediLodge as an RN and has worked for MyMichigan-Sault as a Patient Care Coordnator. Stacey can be reached at stacey.daley@itcmi.org or 906-632-6896.
