Increasing Health Literacy - Home Visiting Network

Increasing Health Literacy Project

About

The Increasing Health Literacy Project funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund aims to enhance health literacy and expand access to culturally tailored mental health resources for tribal members living in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP) and participating in ITCMI’s Home Visiting Network across the state of Michigan. Our goal is to develop and share materials that boost knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy around mental health for both youth and adults. We prioritize perinatal and youth mental health—including support for pregnant and postpartum women, their partners, and youth ages 0–18, along with their parents, caregivers, and peers.

Together, we can strengthen mental health in our community. Start by exploring the resources below.

Youth Mental Health Posters

Developed with input from tribal youth and the Maternal Child Advisory Council, the youth mental health posters were developed to help increase awareness and decrease stigma around youth mental health.  The posters include uplifting messages, cheerful and calm colors, and access to free mental health resources for caregivers and youth.

For more information or to have Youth Mental Health posters sent to your site, please reach out to Josie Babcock at josie.babcock@itcmi.org

Supporting Families and Youth: A Mental Health Perspective for Providers

The Supporting Families and Youth:  A Mental Health Perspective for Providers infographic was developed through Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan’s Increasing Health Literacy Project.  The report summarizes findings from community listening sessions, surveys, and community events. It includes action steps for mental health providers (and anyone working in early childhood or with youth) to reduce barriers to mental health care, engage youth in mental health conversations and education, and integrate culture and holistic approaches.
