New Support Arrives for Increasing Health Literacy Project

SAULT STE. MARIE – Madison Lamma joined the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan’s Maternal and Early Childhood Health
Department in September of 2024 to support the Michigan Health Endowment Fund Community Health Impact Grant titled
“Increasing Health Literacy.”

“The Increasing Health Literacy project aims to enhance health literacy and incrase access to culturally tailored mental health
resources for tribal members residing in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as well as individuals participating in Inter-
Tribal Council of Michigan’s Tribal Home Visiting and Healthy Start Programs,” said Lamma. She continues, “The project
focuses on improving health literacy within the EUP and developing materials aimed at enhancing the knowledge, attitudes, and
self-efficacy of youth and adults regarding mental health. Materials developed by Health Literacy will be available to all of Inter-
Tribal Council of Michigan’s partners.”

Madison graduated form Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie with a degree in Kinesiology in 2019. In 2020, she
also earned a certification from the American College of Sports Medicine for Exercise Physiologists along with the Exercise is
Medicine certificate.

Before coming to the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan; Madison was a Community Health Educator at the Sault Tribe Health
Center where she supported grant programming, facilitating and planning workshops along with developing health education
materials. She was also a Community Health Educator for Medical Fitness where she assessed the health needs of individuals
and group populations and developed material, events, and programs to educate specific populations.
